HAUNTED HEART: Jo Stafford

By SpotCheater On March 25, 2010 Under Extramarital Affair

Jo Stafford adds a beguilling background mood to photos from the 1999 Columbia movie ‘The End of the Affair’ staring Ralph Fiennes and Julianne Moore. The film: On a rainy London night in 1946, novelist Maurice Bendrix has a chance meeting with Henry Miles, husband of his ex-mistress Sarah, who abruptly ended their affair two years before. Bendrix’s obsession with Sarah is rekindled; he succumbs to his own jealousy and arranges to have her followed.

Appreciate the note Hugh, and for sharing some of the song’s beginnings, and it’s effect in the jazz arena.
Good luck with your recording collection.

You’re welcome. Pleased that people are enjoying the casserole of movie snaps and Jo’s version of Haunted Heart. Producers were going to use another song as the film’s theme but decided instead to to use Haunted Heart at the last minute.

    routube,

Thanks for posting a superb version of a lovely Schwartz and Dietz song. (The title is just “Haunted Heart” — you should change your title to reflect that).

Funny that this song, which is a staple in jazz circles — Bill Evans and many many since, I must have 8 or so recordings of it by as many musicians — is rarely recorded by singers.

Agreed, such nuance, such a rich full tone, lovely emotion without the unearned cheap miasma of today…I come back to visit this page…I can’t thank you enough for posting this, Rou!

I thought I knew how good Jo Stafford was…until I heard this song. Jo effortlessly, and without ANY screaming (like, eh 99.9% of today’s “singers”) adds more emotion and feeling to this beautiful meoldoy than anyone else could think of doing! Definitely, for my money, THE most uderrated pop vocalist ever. Much thanks and love to greatest “pied piper” of all time…

Read the original novel by Graham Greene while on a troop ship during the Korean War. Was surprised at the romantic theme since I only knew the author from his crime and spy thrillers. The novel engaged me completely and I believe he used his own personal affair as the theme. Also incorporated his conversion to Catholicism to build on the story. It has haunted me to this day as has the song. Jo Stafford’s version is the definitive one. Thank you much for the posting.

    Thank you Miss Berry.
I have not seen Fiennes in everything he has done, but he is remarkable. There is something haunting about the man regardless of a script being wrapped around him. Glad you enjoyed it,
and thank you for your stars.

I had never heard this gorgeous song, so thanks for introducing it to me. Jo Stafford was a gorgeous woman with an equally gorgeous voice.

A truly lovely video, well done! 5×5 stars.
